Three Steps to New Business Success

Arrow graphOne of the most important steps to new business success is to stop before you start. Here’s why. Startups want to first plot a path to new business success, before they start a business.

Many a new business, especially a home business, starts out with the dream of making money. The problem is they don’t know how they’re going to do it, they don’t know what steps they’re going to take, and they don’t know what it looks like when they reach success.

There are many considerations that a new business needs to think about when they first decide to start a business. Some decisions need to be made before they startup and some after they startup. To begin, here are three steps to new business success to help being the process:

1.Have a picture of what business success looks like

When a home business has a picture of what success looks like, then they know their destination. They know what it’s going to look like when they are successful. This is important. It sounds obvious. But it’s an often overlooked step. To reach the success you dream of, you need to know when you’ve reached it: You can only know that when you have a picture of it in your mind.

For example, success for many means earning $100,000 in one year. For others, success means building a newsletter subscription base of 10,000 subscribers. Still others, dream of the day that their site is on page 1 of Google’s search results. That’s success for them.

Think about it. Those who don’t have a clear picture of what new business success looks like, these are the ones who do this, then that. They are wanders. They don’t know exactly what to do. They just do “something” and that “something” has no end. It’s like riding the Energizer Bunny. They just keep going and going and going… and don’t get anywhere.

The first thing top marketers do — those gurus who are probably a lot like you — is have a clear picture of what success looks like to them. When you have clearly defined what your business success looks like for you, you know when you achieve it. That’s number one, but it’s not all, is it?

2. What Do You Need to Do

Once you know what your picture of success is, then you know what you need to do to get there. That’s number two.

For example if earning a $100,000 this year is your goal, you need to take all the steps you can to make that happen. But if your goal is to be on the first page of Google’s search results, then you know that you need to do all the steps necessary to achieve a top ranking. This is a different objective than making money, even though the end result might be the same, the objective is different.

3. Create Benchmarks

The third step that the big money-makers do — is develop a document to track their progress step-by-step like a maze. Start here. End there, at the finish line. This simply means making a checklist of what to do, when to do it, and when it’s done.

Yes, it is a form of goalsetting. Setting goals is an important part of any strategic planning, marketing, and achieving the business success you want. Without some sort of goalsetting plan, a new business won’t know exactly where they’re going, how to get there, and they won’t recognize success when they do get there. It becomes a guessing game. It’s like walking down a dark alley blindfolded. A newbie may get to some destination, but chances are it won’t be the finish line they hoped for.

Follow these three steps for new business success. There’s no down side. Nothing to lose. Take time right now to write down what you really want to achieve, what you need to do to achieve it, when to do it, and put a checkmark next to that line when it’s done.
